The Virgin Islands Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc. (V.I. RC&D) and its partners, the V.I. Department of Agriculture, the V.I. Department of Planning & Natural Resources, and the North Carolina State University Stream Restoration Institute, are pleased to invite you & your colleagues to attend an informal, hands-on field day demonstration of a Gut Restoration installation – an innovative method to remediate stream bank erosion and restore native riparian vegetation along two 100-foot segments of the Estate Adventure Gut. This gut restoration will reduce transport of sediment and other pollutants to the marine habitat, and enhance the riparian [streamside] corridor for waterfowl and other wildlife. A Field Tour and Erosion Control Demonstration will be held 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Thursday August 6 and a Volunteer Tree Planting will be conducted Friday, August 7, 2009 on the edge of the V.I. Agriculture Department hay fields located in Estate Lower Love St. Croix (across the street from the Ag Fair Grounds). |
Many guts in the Virgin Islands have been severely damaged by human activities: vegetation removal; alteration of natural water flow paths; excavation, filling and paving of gut channels; and trampling by livestock. The impacts of gut destabilization and loss of native habitat include increased sedimentation & flooding of downstream properties, roadways, ponds and coastal habitats and mass-wasting of channels that undermines homes and public roadways. These degraded and unstable water courses also cause significant flooding and land-slide problems during severe storm events, as seen during the heavy rains from Hurricane Omar in October 2008. The symptoms of severely eroded guts include incised channels; eroded, mass-wasted banks; and bank undercuts.
We invite all interested parties – government agency personnel, local engineers, architects, landscapers, hotel personnel, contractors – to attend and participate in this field tour demonstration & tree planting to receive hands-on training as to the proper design and implementation of this practice.
Please RSVP by July 31, 2009 by fax to 340-692-9607 or email to vircd@usvircd.org using this Acrobat Registration form.
