Once again, VI RC&D provided local high school students interested in natural resources with the opportunity to travel to Georgia to participate in a week-long summer camp. VI RC&D has been sponsoring this valuable & unique learning opportunity for VI youth since 2000. For this year's workshop, funding was provided through a $10,700 grant from the V.I. Department of Agriculture's Urban & Community Forestry Assistance Program. VI RC&D sent 9 Virgin Islands high school students and 2 chaperones to the Natural Resources Conservation Workshop to be held June 25-30, 2006 at Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Georgia.

The mission of the workshop is to expose high school students, through multi-agency collaboration, to Georgia's natural resources and the opportunities and responsibilities that they provide. The workshop gives students an opportunity to learn about soil, water, air, plants, minerals, and animals. It features field trips, class instruction and recreational activities.

Students attending the workshop also get a taste of college life while spending an entire week on the college campus of Middle Georgia College. Students are able to gain insight into careers through their counselors and instructors consisting of professional personnel from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, USDA-NRCS, Georgia Forestry Commission, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and many private industries and organizations.
