The Virgin Islands Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. (V.I. RC&D) is seeking 8 Virgin Islands’ high school students between the ages of 15 - 18 to attend the 2008 Natural Resources Conservation Workshop, to be held June 8-12, 2008, at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Georgia. The summer camp is usually only open to Georgia students; however, students from the USVI have participated in this valuable and unique learning opportunity since 2000 through the sponsorship of V.I. RC&D and the V.I. Urban Forestry Council. |
V.I. students and chaperone, Michelle Thurland-Martinez, take a break in the Middle Georgia College cafeteria. |
High school students are exposed to various natural resources: soil, water, air, plants, minerals, and animals. Although the focus is on Georgia’s natural resources, the students learn valuable lessons and can associate these same resources with their local environment. The camp utilizes classrooms and field trip activities to help interested youth learn about the basic principles and wise use of natural resources.
Students also get a taste of college life while spending an entire week on the Abraham Baldwin College campus. In addition, students gain insight into careers through their counselors and instructors, professional personnel from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Georgia Forestry Commission, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and many private industries and organizations. |
